"Fir Trees" (2005)
Experiment with split and multi-center turning. Inspired by the asymmetric look of tall fir trees around here and combined with my turning slogan “The Beauty of Precision” these are split-turned and assembled from a number of different, yet precisely matching pieces. The bases are a combination of split- and multi-center turning.
The single one on the left is the prototype – the base is Quina, a hard and heavy wood from Argentina, the trunk is Osage Orange and the “Fir Part” is Maple, spray painted black. One set of three is from the same wood combo and the last one is Maple, Cherry and Poplar all dyed black with ink, finished with Watco oil to give it a satin luster. Heights are between 18 and 23 inches. Mrs. Werner owns the black set.
